WHO WE ARE

Jack Waxman, Founder

​Jack is a sophomore at Cornell University studying economics. He is in the Cornell Democrats club, and is actively engaged in climate change reform. When Jack was in high school, he created JUULers Against JUUL, a video project shedding light on the truth behind JUULs. After releasing the video, Jack was featured on Good Morning America, The Washington Post, ABC Nightline, and other news outlets. In 2019, Jack stepped down from Students Against Nicotine to devote more of his time to climate activism.

Abe Baker-Butler, Founder, Executive Director

Abe Baker-Butler is a recent high school graduate currently on a gap year before attending Yale University in fall 2021. Abe co-founded Students Against Nicotine in 2018 and has served as Executive Director since late 2019. He is passionate about preventing teen e-cigarette use through peer-to-peer prevention and legislative advocacy, and he was instrumental in the passage of Westchester County’s Tobacco 21 legislation and New York State’s #NoVapeNY Flavor Ban Package. Abe also serves as Vice President of the Westchester Youth Advisory Board and has appeared in the NY Daily News, as well as on MSNBC and the Today Show. He has conducted award-winning neuroscience research on Alzheimer's and sleep, and he is a 2019 Bronfman Fellow and 2020 Coca-Cola Scholar. In his free time, he enjoys playing the saxophone, kayaking, and biking. Abe believes teen social action is key for creating a more harmonious collective future and improving public health.

Paul Agbaje, Prevention Education

Paul is a sophomore at Cornell University, immersed in Students Against Nicotine’s educational initiative, YOUth Decide. His work with Students Against Nicotine encompasses a dedication not only to advocacy and outreach but also YOUth Decide’s design. Paul’s dedication to Students Against Nicotine stems from his passion for advocacy on behalf of America’s youth population. Most recently, this surfaced in his authorial work--his latest essay, Scribbles, published by literary journal Body Without Organs, probes the moral implications of standardized testing for students, alongside the philosophical discourse that it beckons.

Julia Zarkower, School and Partner Engagement

Julia is a senior at Blind Brook High School engaged in developing policy recommendations for contemporary social challenges through her involvement in Tools for Change. Julia is an advocate against the proliferation of flavored e-cigarettes marketed to children. Julia also serves on the Blind Brook Community Coalition as a Student Representative and sees civic engagement as a call to action.

Raghav Joshi, Expansion and Outreach

Raghav, a junior at Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook, NY, has lived in 6 different countries across 3 continents and attended 7 schools. He speaks English, Hindi, Arabic, and Spanish, and has experience as the Outreach Director for the AchieveWE Foundation, an organization dedicated to sharing the experiences of, and building comradery among, children and young adults around the world. He is also collaborating with members of his community to create a Youth Climate Action summit. In his free time, Raghav enjoys playing cricket, playing the piano, flying, and lighting design. He is passionate about preventing teen e-cigarette use through flavoring and marketing restrictions, and is excited to expand Students Against Nicotine’s reach.

Mika is a first year student at Tufts, and is interested in combatting the vaping and e-cigarette epidemic that is affecting youth today. She is also passionate about legislation regarding student safety and equality, and is the president of her school’s GSA (Gender-Sexuality Alliance) club. She has experience in social media and has interned at Asia Society’s Global Initiative department, where she helped prepare events, manage websites, and monitored communication. She is excited to join the Students Against Nicotine team.

Harrison Du, Cessation and Quitting Programs

​Harrison is a senior at Rye Neck High School passionate about helping students quit their nicotine addictions.
​He has participated in the Tools for Change social science research program and the Independent Learner Program, through which he has done research on e-cigarette cessation and teens. Harrison started the Safe to Quit Program and recently has been working with NYS Senators to implement this and other programs in schools. Harrison is excited to join Students Against Nicotine and continue helping current e-cigarette users quit.

Soumya Ajjampudi, Legislative Advocacy, Southwest Director

​Soumya Ajjampudi is a rising sophomore at Lebanon Trail High School in Frisco, Texas. She is interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, and plans to become an internal medicine physician and to set up medical camps in impoverished areas to assist those in need. She is a member of Future Health Professionals of America, National Junior Honor Society, Teach to Learn, TeleHealth Access for Seniors, and Business Professionals of America. She is excited to join Students Against Nicotine to spread awareness about and implement new policies preventing the use of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Claire Cenovic, Legislative Advocacy, Midwest Director

Claire Cenovic is a sophomore at Brownell-Talbot School in Omaha, Nebraska. She is passion about the mitigation of underaged tobacco and e-cigarette use. Claire is the secretary and social media manager of JuSTEMagine, a student led group determined to provide STEM opportunities to students in need. She is excited to join the Students Against Nicotine team.​

​Riya Ramakrishnan , Research & Scientific Advisory Board, California Director

Riya is a sophomore at Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, California, and is passionate about bringing awareness to the dangers of nicotine and tobacco use among youth. Along with working in policy change and outreach, she is very immersed in tobacco, nicotine, and addiction research, and is interested in a career in healthcare. Riya is a member of the California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN), her local coalition, the TFSCCC, the Kaiser Teen Advisory Council, and president of her school's Amnesty International club. In her free time, Riya enjoys playing the oboe and piano, singing on Instagram, and playing with her dog. She is thrilled to be a part of Students Against Nicotine and preventing teen nicotine use through both research and policy change.
